There’s more you can do to get rid of an oily nose. Pick skin care products with the right ingredients first. HealthShots got in touch with Dr Shareefa Chause, Dermatologist, Apollo Spectra, Mumbai, to find out how to get rid of oily nose. But first let’s find out why you get a greasy nose.
Causes of oily nose
You can’t blame the excessive heat or humid all the time when your nose gets greasy.

• Wrong skin care routine
• Over cleansing
• Hormonal fluctuation
• Alcohol and caffeine consumption

• Not applying moisturiser
Here’s how you can do away with oily nose:
1. Choose the right facewash
We might be religiously following a skin care routine, but pick the right products. Dr Chause suggests to use salicylic acid-based facewash. This is important as it helps to remove the excess oil that builds up on your nose. Facewash with a green tea extract is also good as it is a great source of antioxidants.
2. Don’t forget to moisturise
Using a moisturiser is essential even if you have an oily nose. You might think that you don’t need it, but not applying a moisturiser will lead to dryness and in that response, the sebaceous gland will produce more oil, explains the expert. You can go for a gel-based moisturiser.
3. Use sunscreen
We have all heard about the harmful effects of UV rays, so make sunscreen your friend. Apply a mattifying sunscreen in order to make your nose less oily.
4. Drink plenty of water
Staying hydrated is good for health, and now that there are many refreshing drinks for hydration, you shouldn’t skip it. It will only help your skin in getting healthy.
5. Do not over cleanse your face
It’s good to get rid of all the dirt from your face once you are back home, but don’t overdo it. Over cleansing your face can steal moisture from your skin. You should know how to cleanse your face the right way.
6. Take care of the diet
Limit use of alcohol (side effects of alcohol on skin) and caffeinated beverages as they can lead to dryness, which will make the sebaceous gland produce more oil.
7. Try home remedies
Home remedies generally don’t fail us. One that you should definitely try is honey. It has antiseptic and antibacterial properties, so apply honey at night on your nose and massage gently, says Dr Chause. Leave it on your nose for 10 to 15 minutes then wash it off.
Another home remedy for oily nose you can try is sandalwood. Rich in antioxidant, sandalwood also helps to control excessive oil, so you can make a paste of sandalwood. Mix it either with milk or water and apply it on nose. Leave it on your nose for 15 minutes then wash it with water.
