If you don’t care enough for your tresses, you’re bound to get dreaded dull hair! But with a little TLC, you can change the way your hair looks and give it the shine it deserves.
Dr B L Jangid, Dermatologist and Hair Transplant Surgeon, SkinQure Clinic, New Delhi told HealthShots about the best natural ways to get rid of the hair dullness and how to get shiny and smooth hair.
Here are 5 natural ways to avoid dull hair:
1. Apply coconut oil
To improve the health and appearance of your dull, frizzy hair, you can consider using coconut oil. “The advantage of using coconut oil is that it is a great source of vitamins, essential fatty acids, saturated fats, lauric acid, and antioxidants. Apply it 2-3 hours before shower by gently massaging coconut oil into your scalp to improve blood circulation,” says Dr Jangid.
2. Use rice and honey rinse
Amino acids, which aid to heal damage and help to strengthen the root, are present in rice water. The antioxidant and emollient qualities of honey, on the other hand, moisturise the hair and lessen breakage. Use it by mixing one cup of water with half a cup of rice and letting it sit for three to four hours. This water should now be heated while a tablespoon of honey is added. For better absorption, massage your hair for two minutes after using this rinse. After that, you can let your hair air dry rather than shampooing it.
3. Eliminate dryness with curd and honey
Dr Jangid says, “Curd and honey are known to be natural conditioners, while curd contains lactic acid which can help in softening your hair, honey is an incredible moisturizer that can make your hair soft and shiny.” To prepare a paste, take 1 cup of curd and 2 tablespoons of honey and mix them together in a bowl. Apply it over the hair and scalp, leave it for 30 min and rinse it thoroughly with shampoo.
4. Amla and aloe vera hair mask
Amla strengthens hair roots, lessens hair loss, and speeds up growth, all of which are beneficial to hair. Additionally, it is well known for preventing premature hair ageing. Aloe vera, however, moisturises the hair and scalp. Additionally, these components added together can increase your hair’s shine. Add two mashed amlas and four to five tablespoons of aloe vera pulp to a bowl. Apply the resulting mixture evenly to your hair’s length and scalp. After 30 minutes, rinse your hair with lukewarm water. Use it two times each week.
5. Avocado paste
Avocados are not just delicious, but they are also good for your hair health. It is not only rich in omega-3 fatty acids but also contains essential amino acids, vitamin A, D and E, and is also rich in Biotin, which can help retain moisture in the hair, improve hair texture, and may promote healthy hair growth. Whereas, eggs can make your tresses look silky and shiny as they are packed with essential vitamins and minerals.
To prepare a paste, take 1 egg, 1/2 peeled avocado, and blend them together. If you want, you can also add 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Apply this paste on your hair, from roots, scalp to tips. Leave it for 40-50 mins and wash it thoroughly with shampoo.
Keep these two tips in mind to get shiny and smooth hair:
1. Avoid hot shower
If you like to take hot showers, it can make your hair look dull and frizzy. Dr Jangid, “Hot water strips your natural oil, causing moisture loss and dry, dull hair. So, to avoid hair dehydration, turn to lukewarm or cold water when rinsing your hair.” Also, avoid using a blow dryer on your hair; let it dry naturally. Your hair will get more brittle and dry if you use such artificial drying techniques.
2. Eat the right foods
A good and healthy diet is not only beneficial for your body but also plays a crucial role in your healthy hair. So make sure you eat food that is rich in Protein, Iron, vitamin A and C such as eggs, fish, chicken, dairy products, leafy green vegetables, broccoli, carrot, sweet potatoes, nuts, etc. Also, keep yourself hydrated by drinking enough water every day (at least 8 glasses). Dehydration can result in dull, dry hair and can also slow down the process of new hair growth.
Takeaway
There could be multiple factors that may lead to dull, dry hair. By doing some alternation in lifestyle you can prevent your hair from further damage. Though if after following these methods, you witness no improvement, it is advisable to see a certified dermatologist who can assess the problem that is leading to dullness, and dry hair and can suggest medication/treatment with lifestyle modifications for healthy hair.
