Britney Spears reveals she has permanent nerve damage
The 40-year-old said that she is suffering from physical pain on a daily basis due to nerve damage. Spears wrote, “I’m dancing in time now Victoria … yes … nerve damage on the right side of my body … there’s no cure except God I guess … nerve damage is caused sometimes when you don’t get enough oxygen to your brain.”
In an attempt to explain to her fans how the nerve damage manifests, the singer described the problem as brain oxygenation. “Your brain literally shuts down,” she wrote. “Nerve damage causes parts of your body to go numb. I wake up like 3 times a week in bed and my hands are completely numb … nerves are tiny and it feels like pins and needles from the right side of my body it shoots up to my neck and the part that hurts the worst is my temple on my head … it stings and it’s scary … the last 3 years since I got out of that place I’ve been in a mild unconscious state … I couldn’t face it.”
However, Spears continued to mention that dancing helps mitigate the pain. She wrote, “It’s funny though when I dance I don’t feel the pain… it’s like my mind literally goes to a place of my inner child. And although I don’t move like I use to … I truly believe my faith in it gave me strength … by the grace of God I finally found a medication where I actually feel oxygen going to my brain and through my neck.”

What is nerve damage and its symptoms?
Nerve damage is of four main types, and the symptoms and treatment depend on the type that has affected you, according to the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC).
1. Proximal nerve damage
According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, this type of nerve damage is rare and disabling. It majorly affects your thighs, buttocks, and hips. It affects one side of your body and rarely spreads to the other side. Symptoms of proximal nerve damage include:
- Severe pain in the stomach
- Pain in hips, thighs or buttocks
- Finding it difficult to get up from a sitting position
2. Peripheral nerve damage
The peripheral nerves, the brain, and the spinal cord, basically form a network of nerves outside the central nervous system called the peripheral nervous system. According to the National Health Service (NHS), UK, peripheral neuropathy develops when nerves in your hands, arms, and feet are injured. Common symptoms of peripheral nerve damage include:
- Pain in both feet
- Increased pain or sensitivity at night
- Numbness or weakness
- Ulcers or infections in feet
- Bone and joint pain
3. Focal nerve damage
It is also known as mononeuropathy, this condition damages a single nerve in the face, arm, leg or torso. It is more common among adults. Some of the common symptoms of focal nerve damage include:
- Pain behind one eye
- Vision problems
- Numbness in hands and fingers
- Weakness in hands
- Bell’s palsy (inability to move one side of your face)
4. Autonomic nerve damage
In this condition, the nerves that control automatic body functions get damaged. According to several medical authorities, autonomic nerve damage affects your body temperature, digestive function, bladder, blood pressure and $exual function. Common symptoms of the disease include:
- Dizziness
- Urinary problems
- $exual problems
- Sweating too much
- Difficulty exercising
- Inability to recognize
- Digestion problems
Nerve damage can send incorrect signals to the nerve fibres, which may affect the proper functioning of the nerve. As per reports, telling the source of the nerve damage is not always easy and can be linked to all sorts of pain and diseases.
