Immunity boosting drink for monsoon: Try lemon and turmeric water

The monsoon season is here and so are some of the unwanted diseases. Cold, flu, dengue, malaria and typhoid are just some of the diseases that might surprise you this rainy season. We know the precautions that we need to take to ensure good health during monsoon. But sometimes you just go with the flow and enjoy the moment. I stepped out in the rain without thinking about my weak immunity, and ended up with a bad cold. Just like any other mother, my mom went into the kitchen to prepare a home remedy for cold. She came out with a glass of lemon and turmeric water. She just mixed the juice of half lemon and half teaspoon of turmeric powder in a glass of warm water. My mom says that lemon and turmeric water is great for boosting immunity and is a healthy drink for monsoon.

But does it always work? Health Shots reached out to Manpreet Kaur Paul, Nutritionist at Cloudnine Group of Hospitals, Faridabad, to find out more about the efficiency of lemon and turmeric water.

Health benefits of lemon and turmeric water

Lemon and turmeric water is a natural health drink because of the benefits it offers. Paul says that both lemon and turmeric contain bioactive compounds that offer various advantages to the body. When combined, they can create a refreshing and healthy drink. Here are some of its benefits:

1. Boosts immune system

Lemon and turmeric are known for their immune-boosting properties. Lemon has vitamin C, which is important if you want a strong immune system. Turmeric contains curcumin, which is a compound with potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects that can enhance immune function.

2. Has anti-inflammatory effects

We might see inflammation as an evil thing, but it can also be a natural response by our body to protect against injury or infection. However, chronic inflammation is linked to numerous health conditions, including heart disease and arthritis. Both lemon and turmeric possess anti-inflammatory properties that can help to reduce inflammation and lower the risk of chronic diseases.

3. Aids digestion

Lemon and turmeric water can support healthy digestion. Lemon juice, because of its citric acid content, can stimulate the production of digestive enzymes. That helps to aid in the breakdown of food and promote better nutrient absorption. Turmeric has been used traditionally to soothe the digestive system and relieve bloating and gas. It may also help to reduce the risk of conditions like indigestion and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

4. Supports detoxification

Lemon and turmeric water can act as a natural detoxifier for the body. The presence of citric acid in lemon stimulates liver function and helps to flush out toxins from the body. Turmeric aids in detoxification by supporting the liver’s ability to process and eliminate toxins. Regular consumption of lemon and turmeric water can assist in maintaining a healthy liver and promoting overall detoxification, says the expert.

Lemon and turmeric water during monsoon

Lemon and turmeric water can potentially help to keep diseases at bay during the monsoon season. That’s because it has immunity-boosting and anti- inflammatory properties. The monsoon season often brings with it an increased risk of water contamination and food-borne diseases. Lemon and turmeric water can act as a natural detoxifier, supporting the body’s detoxification processes and helping eliminate toxins, says Paul. This water also has antimicrobial properties that can help to fight against bacteria, fungi and viruses. Having lemon turmeric water might offer additional protection against common infections and illnesses during the monsoon season.

What is the best time to drink lemon and turmeric water?

The best time to drink lemon and turmeric water can vary depending on the personal preferences and health goals of the individual. You can drink lemon and turmeric water on an empty stomach to help to rehydrate the body, says the expert. It is believed that consuming it in the morning allows your body to absorb the nutrients more effectively.

Another option is to drink this healthy water 30 minutes before your meal. Doing so can stimulate digestion, enhance nutrient absorption and support healthy metabolism.

But consuming lemon turmeric water too close to bedtime might not be considered ideal for some people. It can have a mildly stimulating effect and interfere with the sleep pattern of those people who are sensitive to acidic foods.

While lemon and turmeric water can be a healthy beverage when consumed in moderation, excessive intake might lead to gastrointestinal issues or disruption of electrolyte balance. It’s all about believing in moderation.
