Causes of monsoon acne
The thing about the monsoon is that when you sweat excessively, your skin’s pores often get clogged with oil, dirt, and grime, which raises the risk of acne breakouts. It makes sense why many report that during the monsoon, their skin issues worsen.
Health Shots got in touch with Dr Sheetu, Associate Professor, School of Pharmacy, to find the best monsoon skincare routine and tips to bid adieu to oily skin and acne.
She says, “Monsoon brings joy and happiness all over our faces. But this season can take a toll on your beautiful skin. Small changes in your daily skincare routine will keep your skin healthy and radiant before the monsoon takes over completely.”
Follow these 5 simple habits for monsoon skincare to make your skin look fresh and keep acne at bay:
1. Mild face wash
This is the most inevitable part of a good skincare routine. Dr Sheetu says, “You should cleanse your face more frequently during the monsoon because there is a rise in the humidity which causes dirt, sweat, oil, and leftover make-up debris to clog the pores and give rise to acne, blackheads, and whiteheads. That makes it an essential step.”
So, use a mild face wash or a soap free cleanser two to three times each day. This will allow your face skin to breathe as the pores will be unclogged. A water-based cleanser would be a good choice!
2. Gentle exfoliation
Another essential skincare routine step involves a gentle exfoliation during the monsoon season. Gentle exfoliation or mild scrubbing two times a week will remove toxins, clean out dead skin cells and avoid infections, which makes your skin look brighter and radiant. That’s not all! When exfoliating your skin, you’re effectively unclogging your pores, which means bye-bye to whiteheads, blackheads, and other blemishes, namely acne. In fact, it’s the best way to combat greasy, oily skin.
3. Do not forget to wear your SPF (Sun Protection Factor)
No matter if you are going out or working from home, or whether it’s cloudy or not, you still need to wear a layer of sunscreen to protect your skin from the various sources of UV rays. Sunscreen create a barrier on your skin against UVA and UVB harmful radiations that can reduce the risk of sunburns, tanning, and premature ageing.
Dr Sheetu suggests selecting a non-greasy, waterproof and sweat-proof sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or above.
4. Moisturize and hydrate
Many people with oily skin think that they should not be applying moisturizer because this can exacerbate the issues. But oily skin need moisturization too. Dr Sheetu says, “Using the right moisturizer will lock the natural hydration and provide nourishment to the skin.” In addition, adequate moisturization to the skin during monsoon will help you get rid of wrinkles and maintain glow of the skin.
Apart from this, drinking enough water will keep your skin hydrated and healthy from inside.
5. Minimal make-up
Whenever it rains, make-up suffers from its typical meltdown. That’s why it is not a good idea to step out with layers of makeup. There is no need to fret much, though. You may beat the rain by making a few simple changes to your usual make-up products.
Go for light-weight water-proof make-up and do not forget to remove your make up with a mild cleanser before going to bed to keep your pores clog free and skin acne free.
