Mother’s Day Gifts: What mothers want for their health

“Mom, what do you want for Mother’s Day?” I asked my mommy. “Your happiness,” she said in a predictable fashion like every year. But if my happiness makes her mental health better, why not? This Mother’s Day, we reached out to a cross-section of mothers to ask them about health and wellness gifts they would like to receive. So, dear readers, if you are scrambling for some last minute Mother’s Day gifting ideas, may be you find a cue here!

Health Shots has put together a list of gifting ideas based on mothers’ choices, and they’re quite interesting.

Healthy gifts for Mother’s Day

From mental wellness to physical fitness – the gifts mothers want are a clear indication that today’s moms are giving self-care the attention it deserves. Let’s check them out!

1. Spa vouchers for Mother’s Day

While your ‘we’ time may be great, maybe your mother would prefer some ‘me’ time on this day. Parul Sharma Trikha, 32, a mother of two little girls, says heading to the spa would be great “because we really need some alone time and relaxation”.

Preethi Kannath, 41, is eyeing a deep massage coupon to relieve all the knots and stiffness from the daily grind. She would also not mind “a gift basket with nice smelling creams, new nail polish, flowers and a handmade card… Because some items really do bring me happiness.”

Anubha Rajpal Ralhan, who has a 1.5 year old baby, says, “A spa day to relax and rejuvenate while my son is taken care of, will be perfect. Much needed for a toddler mother.”

Chhavi Kohli, 31, also thinks a spa visit makes a thoughtful Mother’s Day gift idea. “I’d love it because it will relieve some of the stress that comes with shouldering the responsibility of a child, the house and of course, a full-time job,” says the mother of a two-year-old.

Well, for moms with such little kids, we hope the husbands are reading this!

2. Gym membership

For new mothers, embracing motherhood comes with a great deal of changes in life. One very obvious change is in the physical body. The body, after creating new life, ends up with more weight and width than before. But mothers can work their way back to fitness slowly and steadily.

Keeping this in mind, Tina Oberoi, who gave birth to a boy a few months ago, wants a gym membership! “I want to get back into my pre-pregnancy shape,” she says.

3. Uninterrupted sleep

Small joys are the biggest. Ask a mother about it! When we asked some mothers about Mother’s Day gift ideas or Mother’s Day activities they would like, here’s what we got!

Fashion designer Nitya Birla Bajaj said, “I would like to receive a few hours of undisturbed sleep.”

Even Unnika Manhas, who spearheads a handmade lifestyle products brand for babies, simply asked for: “A night of peaceful sleep”.

Preethi says a family decision to let a mother sleep in on a weekday, would be heartening. “The other family members will take over all your morning chores and you get to rise without a panicky alarm,” she adds.

Sleep, by the way, is one of the most underrated aspects of health. Having a disturbed sleep pattern can affect both mental and physical health. So, if you’re old enough to give your mom a break from everything, help her sleep well!

4. Fitness accessories

Now here’s a healthy gift for life! Mobility is important for your mother’s long-term health. Giving her a pair of good walking or running shoes will motivate her to step out and move.

Rachna, a runner, wants anything that fuels her love for running.

Kanika Chhabbra says receiving a pair of new sports shoes for running would be good for her for two reasons. “The first is fitness. And the second is getting my own time with nature.”

Adding to that, Henna Nankani Shahdadpuri, 33, says a fitness tracker could be a handy healthy Mother’s Day gift. It could help her consciously score a minimum of 10,000 steps a day!

At 50, Prachi Jain has recently joined the gym. She wants to be gifted a “box of whey protein like body builders have!”

5. Mental health gifts for moms

In a pleasant surprise, moms seemed to care about their own mental health.

Henna, who has a 3.5 years old son, wants an extension of school hours and class schedules for children! On a more serious note, she feels an essential oil diffuser and meditation cushion will help her dial down her stress levels.
